Fissure Sealants

The fissures are located in the chewing surface of a tooth. They are often very narrow, winding and deep – an ideal hiding place for bacteria.

A toothbrush cannot penetrate them, even with the most careful handling. In these niches, leftovers sit tight. The result is dental plaque.

Bacteria produce acid from sugar, which dissolves the hard enamel. The result, especially in children and adolescents is caries (or dental decay)

Fissure sealing is the closing of pronounced ridges and furrows on tooth surfaces by thin flowable composite material. This therapy is usually applied after the eruption of the first molars, which are more prone to decay.
